So I've been getting my act together and trying to produce new work. Funny enough, this is an old illustration from sophomore year. After working ont the wine label, I wanted to try out some more digital work but needed a good drawing to do so and seeing that I enjoyed the drawing from an old assignment, I thought I would spruce it up to fit my current portfolio better. I'm starting to get an better understand of where I can go with my work which only fuels my excitement to keep producing!

This was a fun project that I recently doodled which I will be turning in for my last illustration assignment, a pseudo wine label. Starting from a sketch of merry winos, I rendered the whole piece in photoshop, and yes, I know I need to use more textured brushes. It was more of an exercise in color that I thoroughly enjoyed working on. And as you can see, the updates have begun so stay tuned!!!

Waaaay too long

So I've noticed its only been 2 months since I've updated!!! This year has been the most satisfying yet stressful experience I've ever had, especially with Illest. I just want to satisfy the need to post a doodle I've been sitting on. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and I hope to complete other works in the next few days and do a proper post with pictures from Illest, paintings, comics, drawings and more!

Until then, aren't you glad your job doesn't involve shooting rogue octopi?

After months of procrastinating and with the Megacon submissions looming closely on the horizon, I've dusted off an old comic project from Pratt's class last semester to finish. The story from which I drew this is "Born of Man and Woman" by Richard Matheson, a very odd and creepy short story to say the least. This is just some progress with the finished project soon to come!

Greetings!

I can't believe this is the start to my last year in college! I can't wait to go out there and finally get paid for all the knowledge and skills I have now. I've been working like a dog, 8 days a week trying to accomplish all that I started this summer, mostly pertaining to the Illest of Ill Art Exhibition in October. These are a few paintings and drawings done over the course of the summer. I'm so stoked to start my last Illustration class and be with all the amazing artists here. It's gonna be a wild ride of a year!

What a blast this summer has been! I have been non-stop busy with so many projects I actually miss being in school. Lately I have been working with local Sarasotians on a variety projects, one of them being a fantastic show produced by John Lichtenstein called The End of the Dial Tone Radical Experimental Collaborative Music Band Band. John pulls together different local musicians to put on an amazing musical jam sessions every month. I had the great privilege to make a flier for one of these events and greatly look forward to see the show!

Holy Cow, the semester is over!!!!

The work now begins as it is time to clean the metaphorical dust off this blog of mine so I can tell of some amazing makings in the works. I get to have the great pleasure of staying on campus as a Glass Fellowship participant which allows me to be working within the community over the summer. As one of the students in the fellowship, I will be helping with the Greatness Beyond Measure Teen Summit, Sarasota Community Radio WSLR 96.3, along with great local bands and artists. My time will also be split with other fantastic students in their individually created community service projects, in which I will update on soon enough. Met some great people already and I cannot express how excited I am to be apart of Sarasota culture!

In Illest news, we are making headway in our plans and I encourage everyone to get pumped over the summer to make some killer artwork for the show! Check out the Illest of Ill tumblr page for upcoming articles and news from the Illest Crew. Believe me when I tell you it will be sensational evening on October 14th.

I finally got around to scan some of my work from the semester, hence the blog post! Just a sampling of some work done over the course of the semester, I will post more later when I get a chance to edit them.

Stress levels are high as I rush to get things accomplished! It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to update this blog here with school, Illest and future opportunities have kept my mind and hands occupied. For today, I have my first 3-D assignment, in which we had to model a figure based off a teacher. I chose George Pratt, put his Batman costume on and had him relax and check emails from his iPad. The next two are from my Synergism class with Mike Hodges. The assignments were 'Awesome Thingy' and 'Fearsome Creature' respectively. That class has been such a challenge, I recommend anyone who has the chance to take it! Then random figure drawing......

Illest is making headway and will be making some announcements very soooooooooon so keep in touch!

First Illustration of the year!

The title of the post is pretty self-explanatory. Pratt assigned us to do a book cover and I chose to do "The Illustrated Man." Pretty out there, huh? This was a lot of fun for me to do, just because I'm trying to let go of the way I used to go about creating art and just have more fun, as I have said in the previous post. The original painting is 2'x3' and I did the whole thing in acrylic with a palette knife. I also hand painted the text and added that digitally. This semester has started of strong, very busy with much work to do. Not only for classes but in preparation for Illest of Ill '11!!!!!! It's gonna be awesome!

Man, I feel like the semester is almost done, time is flying by.

Some figures and thoughts...

It has been a couple of days since my last post, there's been holidays and a new year and a new semester! I've been hitting the ground running since the start of school. I've got some cool things coming up, some school projects I'm pretty stoked on doing and perhaps even a personal piece or two. There's been a change of thought for me since I had time to think over the break and I've decided I want to have fun at art school. I spent the last year and a half chasing an ideal that wasn't my own which in turn could have hindered my learning process here at Ringling. So I want to change that. I want to be able to solve problems efficiently and get the idea across before worrying about how pretty the picture will turn out. This will take quite a bit of work as I am still trying to find a spot I feel comfortable in. But what artist isn't? For now, I just need to work hard and produce as much bad art as possible so I can learn to make good art from my millions of mistakes!

I knew I would be doing a mass amount of work, but I never figured it would be this much! I have decided to upload quite a bit of what I've been working on from figure, graphic novel, illustration, computer illustration, and for good measure, a bit of personal work. Can you believe I actually have time for personal work?!?!!? We have about three more full weeks here which is just enough time to really pump out some quality work for my final projects.

Now I must get back to the grindstone!

Finally some finished work!

The weight is off my shoulders that is known as Illest of Ill! We had a wonderful opening show, it had a fantastic vibe thanks to the decorations, the art and Josh Cochran himself! Unfortunately I do not have any pictures since my job was to man the tables for selling shirt and general errand boy for the night, but next year will be my year to bask in all the Illest glory! And now that its all over, I must return to art with a focus and dedication that will rival all others. These next two months will be very challenging but I feel that I will grow more as an artist every day. So fo your eyes to feast upon, I have a finished oil illustration along with some other projects and doodads.

Illest Fundraiser & Illest of Ill #5 & new doooooodles

SO many things have happened and are happening!

First off, I gotta say that Illest of Ill #5 is NEXT FRIDAY, October 15th!!!!! We are having the talented Josh Cochran fly in next Wednesday, which also happens to be the submission date for all you students out there. The Illest crew has been working extremely hard to get this year's show to be the best ever. One of the new things we introduced this year is the Illest Poster Show Fundraiser, planned and hosted by Sarah McCauley and myself, which turned out to be a wonderful hit and hopefully something to pass on for the years to come. I will be detailing more on Illest news throughout the next year as well so everyone can be well-informed of what Illest is about.

Ive been incredibly busy these past couple of weeks and only have one more week to get through until I get to focus on my projects which also means more updates of work! And only time will tell, but until then....

Indeed, the date draws near as we scramble to get activities planned and galleries to setup. I, personally, am ridiculously stoked about this years Illest of Ill show and will help those around me be just as excited! I made a twitter account so will lessening the amount of doodles and whatnot, reserving the space for process and Illustration work. But every so often will update with the most awesome of sketches (hopefully)

This semester will most definitely have its trying times soon enough, but again for now, doodles and whatnot.

I hope many of you Ringling Ill kids had the opportunity to submit this time around! Rough Days

Well, it has been a rough weekend for a lot of people that I know and love, my heart goes out to them. I've been meaning to post new stuff so now it has become something to keep my mind occupied from the current events of my life. Included are some sketchbook works and some ink experiments. I'm currently wrapping up my summer paintings and will post updates on those soon.

On a side note, I have a secret project underway and won't show any progress of any sort until the whole thing is finished. It will be the most personal work I have done and will be in memory of Dave.

I've been on a drawing kick the past week and have trying to knock out some Illest work. I know it's early in the game I just need to get these done now to make way for other stuff later. I still have to work on some color ideas for these as they are just B&W at the moment. I also been doodling around...

A question every artist needs to ask themselves: What am I doing and why should anyone care?

There are a lot of artists out there in the world right now, and those are your competition.

Well, I suppose it's about time I write down everything i have done so far this summer, just to see what I've done. Then I want to list out my future goals for the rest of the summer, you'll see I have a short amount of time to do everything. ;)

From my count, since the beginning of summer, I have done 18 individual oil paintings ranging from 4x5 in to 2x3 ft. 2 of the larger paintings were done by commission and was quite a blessing for me. Most were small to medium studies not really worth showing. I have finished my moleskine from last semester and I'm officially halfway through my one for the summer. I feel in the short two months since school has gotten out I have grown strong in my painting and drawing skills. Not only in technical skills, but conceptually, I also have been branching out. I'm thinking how I want my line work and drawings to look like and how that could be integrated into different painting techniques. This has grown out of drawing from life and by painting a lot ;)

Even though I am starting to feel more content with where I am at artistically, I still have this unending drive to become better. And I think this may be partly fueled by this raging jealousy to see others who I find artistically better than me in one form or another. Of course, this is not a topic of conversation for me, but just a realization I want to become the best. This sounds arrogant but it is important for any artist to have this mentality while they are struggling among the swarms of other struggling artist. Because of the built up 'rage' inside me, it has driven me to work towards a goal. The goal being my work from the summer revolving around my apartment to be exhibited at the Crossley Gallery at school in either a group or solo show when school starts up. Each work has a significant tie-in with my events of the summer so far. I have finished 4 of my proposed 7 paintings.

This leads me to what I now have to accomplish to attain my goal. I need to finish the 5th and start and finish the 6th and 7th painting in my series. Also, I have another commission, a portrait of two kids, along with a painting for an entry in a scholarship competition, the 3 Illest designs, finish my sketchbook, any other spur of the moment or divine inspiration art, write essays on my paintings for the hopeful show, keep working at my job, hang out with my friends, inspect my eyelids, drop the kids off at the pool, and turn 21. Quite a to-do list. I can only hope it is possible in the allotted time.

I'll finish by saying this: If you have NOT done some sort of creative work this summer, keep in mind that on the day I went to the hospital for my kidney stone, not only did I work by myself at work, drove myself to the hospital, in ER for 6 hours pumped full of meds, I still got around to drawing 3 pages in my sketchbook afterward.

Basically, I don't want to hear your excuses.

But I hope everyone from Ringling is having a wonderful summer and any other of those people I know who check up on this. For me, my summer has had its ups and downs but all-in-all, a great time.

These are the past week's sketches, followed by 3 drawings for Illest of Ill that I'll be taking to finish sometime this summer along with everything else. I'd like to see maybe one of these as a shirt, one a sticker, and another a poster, but we will see how they turn out. As you can see, two were inspire by my life drawing sketches, which I think support the fact you must draw all the time and from life, it can only help generate ideas. Then my two recent WIP in my summer series, both are diptychs.

Well, this past weekend has been quite a roller-coaster-of-a-ride. I found out on Friday I had a kidney stone so I stayed the weekend with my friend George, John and Alex (who were the most hospitable of hosts ;) ). I was able to do a bit of sketching, which helped my mood substantially. I'm starting to feel more comfortable in how I approach drawing.

As I write this at 4 in the morning, forgive me, for it is limbo. Is it late or early?

For all the Ringling kids, anyone else been keeping up the output of creativity, right? I assume everyone's got some summer projects, lets keep motivated to produce some personal work this summer. I know everyone has a life to attend to, but think about it this way. Would a medical student completely stop the learning process when there was an option to do so? Keep in mind we pay close to the same tuition prices.

I think not, classmates.

So, if you got blogs, websites, pictures, what have you, post 'em. Ringling needs to have a class to excel across the board in all forms of art making. And lately I've been thinking it helps when there is a communication with peers. I transferred into this class and have had the pleasure of getting to know a lot of great people here. It has been too much fun at times and I've seen a lot of us grow as artist, and we have still have time to grow and develop here at school.

Some things to think about over summer are Illest of Ill, we gotta fill up the hall with some baddass stuff. Think of it has if you have no other option, an assignment of an overall peer pressure from our fellow students. I'm not sure if they have released the topic yet, but post it if you know

But the great thing about today's generation is our use of social networking sites in which we can share progress if you so choose to. I'm trying to guilt trip ya here ;) Some of you know the workload you laid out in your schedule, keep a pace to prepare for the ever approaching August day. I beg of all to just practice some technical skills, look into a couple of interests, think how you can visually communicate conceptually.

I just want to see a community develop with our classmates, because to be honest, you learn a quite from those around. Let's keep the ball rolling for everyone.

just wanted to put up some very fast paintings of shoes I am using for a package design for my graphic design class. These are all done very quickly, each taking an hour. I think they look decent for the time spent on them. I also have my latest illustration, subject matter had to be a discussion of sorts, so I chose pillow talk in a sense. acrylic on board

In other news, i wont be exhibiting the pieces that got into best of Ringling due to the fact that framing costs are ridiculous and I dont fave that kind of money to throw around. I consider it an honor just to have my pieces picked anyway.

I found out yesterday that two pieces of mine got into best of Ringling which i gotta say is pretty awesome.
The pieces were my acrylic monkey and a portrait of Christine. The funny thing is that the portrait was entered on a whim as suggested by Don Brandes, and when I picked it up, the master Greg Manchess himself commented on it.

So congrats to everyone else who got in, I know its gonna be a good show!

This was for my latest illustration assignment. We had to illustrate the lyrics of a song and the artist who sang it. I chose "Lucinda" by ..... (I hope you can see) Tom Waits. I went for the feel of the song and some literary images from the song lyrics. Acrylic on board

Also, scratchboard, I'll be doing some sort of background in the next couple of days. For some reason it reminds me of Byzantine art.

Hello, everybody. Got some exciting news. My sketchbook got into Illest of Ill, and for those who don't know what that is, it is a student run gallery showcasing some of the top Illustration student work. This year it was judged by visiting artist Andrew Hem. Tonight is the opening and Im pretty stoked to see what else was chosen.

As for this post, these are some watercolors from Brandes' media class, which I then amped up in photoshop (to make it look better so don't judge ;) ). I've been having a lot of fun with these, I hope you enjoy.

rough thumbnails for Casmer. Illustrating a short story about a brain surgeon. Everyone in class is doing the same story so im interested in where others will take the illustration.

What are some thoughts with the ink for the thumbnails? Does it work visually? Let me know.

This is my first illustration for my illustration class taught by the department head, Tom Casmer. The assignment was to pick a phobia and I chose Athazagoraphobia, which is the fear of being forgotten. I tried to get the mood, I hope it worked.

Acrylic, gouache, and colored pencil on Strathmore bristol.
